Summary - Job Responsibilities – Activities:

Seeking an experienced mechanical designer for focused project work. The successful candidate will work with directly with an engineering based team to develop advanced superconducting equipment. They successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design, and manufacturing practices. The designer is expected to take responsibility for various, mechanically-intensive sub-assemblies and be responsible for their completion into finished detailed packages. A demonstrated ability to drive detailed design packages through fabrication and floor assembly and test is a definite plus. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of the ANSI Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard and other established mechanical drafting practices.

Functions:

  • The candidate should have design experience integrating most of the following: bearings, seals, weldments, castings, coatings, and anodizing.
  • A strong background in designing machined parts and welded fabrications, and knowledge of machine shop practices is required.
  • The position calls for communicating and working in a team environment.
  • The designer will be responsible for various mechanically intricate sub-assemblies.
  • Responsibility will continue through parts manufacture as well as system assembly and test.

Education - Experience:

  • 10 years of demonstrated machine design experience.
  • 10 years experience using a solid modeler.
  • The individual should be capable of working effectively in a multidisciplinary team consisting of scientists, engineers, and support personnel (machinist-technicians)

Required Skills, Competencies, Authorities and Training Needs:

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD system and PDM/Agile integration.
  • Open minded designer with broad multidisciplinary knowledge and interests.
  • Experience in cryogenic and vacuum system design, including use of materials, welding and brazing preparations, and a basic understanding of insulation and heat transfer principles is a plus.
