The DAVIS Companies has partnered with a global leader in the Industrial Metrology fields by helping secure a Controls Automation Engineer for their team. This is an incredible (Direct Hire) opportunity to be a part of a unique, highly specialized and highly valued team within the organization. 

The Controls Automation Engineer will support all projects for controls and automation across multiple product platforms. The Controls Automation Engineer will help to establish the company’s standards for the automation systems, as well as recognize issues, address them, and implement solutions effectively. Machines are generally controlled using PLC software operated using touch screen HMI panels. This position will work as the interface between the hardware, software and applications group to ensure the project requirements We are looking for a self-starter with experience in the design, build and debug of complex automation systems.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement control systems (logic software and controls hardware) to meet machine and integrated system requirements.
  • Definition of commercial components needed to meet project needs, including acquiring quotes and lead time for critical items.
  • Design machine control systems using CAD software that allows for effective control system implementation for electrical and pneumatics.
  • Provides support during design, build and testing phase of the project.
  • Clear communication with the project manager on schedule and scope implications through the project lifecycle.
  • Lead the control debug activities to insure the machine debug phase of the project is completed on schedule.
  • Will assist with initial start-up and debug of integrated systems in house and at customer locations.
  • Development of system documentation.

Professional experience:

  • Proficient in Design/Drafting Tools such as ProE, AutoCAD or SolidWorks or Eplan.
  • Experience with programming PLC’s (e.g. Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Configuring and designing HMI/OIT systems (e.g. Allen Bradley, Cmore, Direct Connect).
  • Familiar with Industry Standards UL and CE.
  • Familiar with Vision Systems (e.g. Cognex, Keyence) a plus.
  • Familiar with various Motion Controllers & Robotics (Staubli, ABB, Fanuc, Automax, Allen Bradley).
  • Experience and skill in troubleshooting control system issues.
  • Excellent problem solving and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and be comfortable presenting technical information to customers and vendors as needed.
  • BA/BS degree in engineering or equivalent (BSEE degree preferred)
  • 8+ years of experience in the automation industry preferred.

  • Willing to travel as necessary to support the business objectives (Including International)
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical reports
  • Ability to draw out and document customer requirements that form the basis of the contractual scope of work
  • Ability to perform in a Teaching/Trainer related capacity as necessary during technology demonstrations or customer training classes,
  • Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to work independently from problem statement to solution
  • Ability to learn independently to find best automation solutions
