Manual Machinist

Purpose and Scope

To machine metal components by setting up manual lathes, mills, presses or other machining equipment to perform one or a series of repetitive operations such as turning, boring, or facing metal work pieces according to specifications; to check and verify conformance of machined product to established specifications.

 

Responsibilities

  • Set-Up and operate designated machines per verbal and written instructions, utilizing travelers, figures and sketches provided by the company or supervisor to produce tooling, fixtures and/or production parts as needed.
  • Must show continual improvement in their ability to set-up and operate their designated machine(s) in a timely and accurate manner, and be productive throughout the workday keeping mental and unfocused errors to a minimum.
  • Must have the ability to use hand finish and deburring tools to remove burrs from parts coming off or going on the machines.
  • Must be able to plan and execute the machining of pie or soft jaws on manual lathes for new or first run pieces and to work with no or minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to read blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and measure sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Must be able to select and secure accuracy holding fixtures, jaws, cutting tools, inserts, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers and grinders.
  • Starts and observes machine operation with caution to detect set up errors, malfunctions, or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • (May) confer with supervisors, engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Maintain fluid and coolant levels in designated machines, and keep machines and working areas around machines clean and dry of waste, oils, and fluids.
