POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Senior Laboratory Automation Engineer is responsible for successfully developing, implementing, calibrating, repairing, and verifying new equipment and processes in the laboratory. The Sr. Laboratory Automation Engineer also assists in the transfer of newly developed assays from the development stage to routine practice in the laboratory in a manner that is consistent with the goals of Oxford Diagnostic Laboratories and in compliance with the Quality Management System. Critical to the role is ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, laws and requirements of requisite agencies by employing appropriate systems/processes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Applies laboratory automation experience to the process development, improvement, and troubleshooting of laboratory procedures and workflows at the Memphis facility
  • Designs, conducts and implements new equipment validations/verifications in the laboratory in an independent fashion
  • Responsible for equipment repair, calibration, troubleshooting and correlations
  • Provides continuous feedback to the Management Team on process improvements in order to maximize sample throughput and improve the quality of processes in the laboratory
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to identify creative and novel solutions to workflow challenges
  • Prepares detailed project plans in line with R&D strategy
  • Supervises junior staff as required
  • Prioritizes workload to ensure key objectives are in line with project timelines and budgets
  • Identifies opportunities to expedite/improve project completion, develops new projects, or new uses of current technology 
  • Ensure that conclusions in written reports reflect the data presented and reports are of the highest quality
  • Reviews and/or authors SOP’s in support of the testing processes
  • Applies expertise in liquid handling robotics (Hamilton MicroLab Star, Tecan/Cavro, Perkin Elmer Janus, Dynamic Devices Lynx), tube labeling and capping, tube and microplate handling, specimen storage, and other lab automation technologies
  • In collaboration with IT, leads system integration projects through the development of instrument drivers and LIS interfaces
  • Develops software solutions to fill gaps in third-party workflow software solutions and identifies opportunities to build and integrate sample tracking capabilities to complement our LIS
  • Implements new barcode labeling and scanning capabilities to achieve 100% complete chain of custody in sample tracking
  • As part of a multi-site team, actively contributes to projects at other sites as needed
  • Performs a critical role in the engineering and scale-up of our T-spot laboratory by developing systems that will enable rapid and efficient capacity scale-up, using laboratory robotics

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD/MSc/BS in Engineering with experience in life sciences, preferably Biotechnology or Biochemistry and 3 to 5 years of applicable experience in a high throughput lab automation environment is required; or equivalent amount of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience with lab automation instrumentation, including robotic liquid handlers, vision systems, tube labeling and scanning, sample handling automation, collaborative robots, and integrated robotic systems is required
  • Technical experience in the areas of laboratory automation and robotics, software development for instrument control, mechanical systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and other electrical control systems is a plus
  • Well-grounded in engineering principles and test methods with demonstrated hands-on troubleshooting competency working with complex instrumentation
  • Programming techniques (VB,JAVA,C/C++), script writing, and database (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server) technologies including command of SQL language desired
  • Experience integrating Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) with automated systems desired
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously and able to create, adapt and follow work plans
  • Requires analytical skills necessary to plan, design or enhance highly?complex systems and programs
  • Breaks problems/project plans down into their component parts then analyses the links and potential implications and finally uses that data to overcome the problems
  • Knows how their role fits within the whole process
  • Takes responsibility for delivering the required results to the required standards
  • Acknowledges the importance of high standards and works to get things right the first time every time
  • Previous experience working with FDA-regulated products is strongly preferred
  • Previous experience in PCR, DNA Extractions IFA, microscopy and imaging, immunological assays, T cell activation assays, Elisa, cell assays, cell cultures is also desirable
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate a high degree of personal & professional initiative is expected
  • Keeps others informed about progress without needing to be prompted
  • Familiarity with Quality System concepts and CLIA requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a global, multicultural collaborative team environment is expected
